From the author:
This book has developed from my experience of reading lectures in English stylistics and although it is not a systematic presentation of the course, the reader will find here much of the material expected to be known by a student of the foreign languages institute. At the same time it is not a mere echo of the current textbooks on the subject which are primarily oriented to the linguistic analysis of creative literature.
The main aim of these essays is a different one — to show the reader that style is an indispensable quality of all uses of English, including informal communication, and that colloquial style is no less important than any other style of the language — a fact that is more than often overlooked.
